James Betts


Professor Betts joined the University of Bath in 2015 and since then has conducted numerous randomised controlled trials in the area of nutrition and human function. His research interests span with human health and human performance and he has accumulated a portfolio of research funding across these areas of >£2M from government research councils (e.g. BBSRC x 2, MRC), international industry (e.g. GlaxoSmithKline, Lucozade Ribena Suntory, Nestle), learned societies and global charities. 

He is a recognised expert in his field, having published >70 peer-reviewed journal articles, with over one-third within the top 10% most highly cited papers and within the top 5% of high-ranking journals (e.g. PNAS, Cell Metab., eLIFE, AJCN, AJP, J.Physiol.). In 2015 Professor Betts was awarded the Cuthbertson Medal at the Royal Society of Medicine for ‘excellence in clinical nutrition and metabolic research'. 

His international reputation is further evidenced by appointment to governmental organisations (UK-Sport, All-Parliamentary reports), grant-review boards (Academy of Finland) and industry expert panels (ILSI, GlaxoSmithKline, Kellogg’s, PepsiCo, Dairy Council), along with a Fellowship with the American College of Sports Medicine and he is a editor with the International Journal of Sports Nutrition & Exercise Metabolism. His opinion in the area of nutrition and human function is regularly sought for review articles, invited conference presentations and mainstream interviews broadcast to millions (e.g. BBC World News, Sky News, Channel 4), along with dedicated print-media features in New Scientist, New York Times, Huffington Post, TIME Magazine and South China Morning Post
